NPI UPDATE JUNE 2007

CMS - the Center for Medicare and Medicaid - has announced that it will be sharing some NPI information - but not items like social security numbers of tax ID numbers. This is a link to information from the APA Practice Organization regarding this release and what you need to do regarding being sure your information is protected. Originally, CMS was going to begin release on June 28. That as been delayed until August 1 - read the new posting from the APAPO below. CMS has said that practitioners have until JULY 16 to update information priot to the August 1 release.

This is a follow-up to the e-mail I sent you last week regarding CMS’s plans to publicly release NPI information on June 28th:

CMS has extended the deadline for the public release of NPI information to August 1, 2007. However, they warn that providers will need to have their NPI information updated prior to the August 1 date in order to be sure that the updated information is included in the August 1 release. CMS has not yet released the deadline by which providers will have to have updated their information, but say they will do so in the “near future.” The new deadline will be released on their website at http://www.cms.hhs.gov/NationalProviderStand/ .

CMS has announced that practitioners have to change/update their NPI information by July 16, 2007 in order for the changes/updates to be included in the August 1st public release of the information.

We strongly encourage practitioners to check their NPI information and update as needed as soon as possible. Practitioners can check the accuracy of the NPI information currently stored under their name by going online to https://nppes.cms.hhs.gov/ and clicking on “National Provider Identifier.” If you applied for your NPI electronically, you would then click on “Login” to review and update your information as necessary, using the user ID and password you created when you applied. If you applied for your NPI using a paper form, you would begin by clicking on “Create Login to View or Update Your NPI Data.”

I’ve attached the notice we sent last week to the members before the deadline was extended. Please let me know if you have any questions. Thanks.
